10 Workout Tips for BeginnersSo you want to get into exercise do you? The good news is that you are making a choice that you will be grateful for for the rest of your life, but the bad news is that it is going to be a tough couple of weeks at the beginning. No matter who you are, starting to work out or exercise is a challenge, but below you will find some tips that will help you to go about it the right way and lose weight.
If you can heed the advice below, you will find that it will be easier and more effective than you had thought:
Workout Tips #1: Take it slow. Don’t get so interested in getting buff or running a marathon tomorrow that you strain your muscles. Seeing as you are just getting started, take things slow and find out where you are at. Test your muscles with each exercise, and start working out a bit less than you wish you could. Work your way up to working out or exercising more, as that will help you to avoid injuries that could stop you from being able to work out altogether.
Workout Tips #2: Check with doc. If you are interested in a program, you may find that it will be easier than you had expected. If you are signing up for a more intense program – such as boot Camp or the P90X series – check with a doctor just to be sure that you are in good shape. If you have any heart problems, asthma, or other medical conditions, they could just get worse if you do the wrong exercise program. Have your doctor sign off on the program before getting started.
Workout Tips #3: Make it a part of your day. It is going to be hard to set aside a whole chunk of your day to do exercise, as that time was designated for something else before. Now, however, it has to be a part of your day, so add it into your schedule just like your lunch or taking a shower before bed. If you can make it a fixed part of your schedule, you will be much less likely to flake out on your exercise. Pencil it in, shuffle around your day, and make sure that you get the exercise no matter what.
Workout Tips #4: Build the habit. A habit takes at least 6 weeks to build, so that is how long you have to commit to doing exercise every day of the week – or at least six days a week. If you flake out on the exercise even one day, it will set back your efforts to make the habit and you will have to basically start all over again. Make sure to stay faithful with your exercise, no matter how much you DON’T want to do it. Building the habit will be a challenge, but your exercise will be much easier once you are in the groove of things.
Workout Tips #5: Set a goal. If you are just working out for the sake of doing exercise, you probably won’t be as faithful as you would be if you were working towards a specific goal. Set a weight goal if you are going to get into strength training, or set a distance goal if you are planning on getting into running or cycling. If you have something to work towards, it will be much easier for you to keep your eyes on the big picture and avoid the little distractions that would try to keep you from exercise.
Workout Tips #6: Have fun with it. If you are just working out towards a goal, what happens when you reach the goal? All of a sudden your objective is reached and you have no reason to continue. If, however, you can actually have fun with the exercise, you will find that you will be able to continue on with your exercise even once you have reached the goal. In addition, it will make it much more fun for you to exercise every day if you are doing something you enjoy.
Workout Tips #7: Do it with a buddy. If you are going to get into exercise, why not get a friend to join you? You will find that being able to work out together will make it much less likely that either of you will flake out, as you will both be responsible to the other. It is important that you do your best to continue on with the exercise no matter how hard it gets, and having a friend along to help you will be one of the best ways to stay faithful no matter what.
Workout Tips #8: Eat at the right times. You are going to be using a lot more energy than you did on the days when you didn’t get your exercise, so eat accordingly. This doesn’t mean that you should pig out on food just because you are working out, but it does mean that you should start cutting back on unhealthy carbs and sugar in favor of healthy carbs and protein that will give you energy and keep your muscles strong. A diet combined with exercise is the only way you will be able to get fit.
Workout Tips #9: Do something every day. If you can’t fit a gym trip into your schedule every day, make it a point to do something every day – no matter how small it seems. Take a few minutes to climb the stairs after lunch, walk to work one day a week, take an evening stroll with your spouse, or bike around the park during your break.
Workout Tips #10: Reward yourself. Don’t try and push yourself and give your body an intense workout every day, but find a way to reward your body by doing exercise that is fun.
