What You Need to Do to Have a Healthy Prostate

old man3 300x199 Healthy ProstateHaving a healthy prostate is very important for men, as it’s located in the same general region as man’s most important body part. Keeping your prostate healthy will ensure that you have a long and pain-free life, so it’s important to know what you can do to keep this important gland as healthy as possible. Here are a few things you can try:

Have a Healthy Prostate: Stay Trim

It’s important for men of all ages to stay healthy and at a realistic weight, but it’s even more important once you start getting into your 40s and 50s. This is when many health problems can begin to loom, and prostate cancer is just one of them. If you want to have a long, happy, and pain-free life, do exercise and stay at a healthy weight.

Have a Healthy Prostate: Crunch Down

The crunchy – or cruciferous – vegetables in your pantry contain lots of fiber, which will help to reduce the levels of toxins and free radicals in your body. You’ve already got enough to worry about without outside influences increasing your risk of prostate problems, so eat more fiber to ensure that your body stays as free of toxins and free radicals as possible. The crunchier the veggies are, the better they will be for your prostate health. Go for broccoli, cabbage, bok choy, kale, and cauliflower, as they’ll be great for the health of this important little gland.

Have a Healthy Prostate: Get Antioxidants

There are certain fruits and vegetables that contain antioxidants, and it’s important to get more of these. Carrots contain Vitamin A, tomatoes and papayas contain lycopene, and blueberries and red grapes contain resveratrol. Get as much of these foods as you can, as they’ll help to fight off prostate cancer and other problems. Catechins and ECGC in green tea can be a boost to keep your prostate healthy, so drink a cup of this tea every day. A bit of dark chocolate will be a good source of flavonoids, another prostate-boosting antioxidant.

Have a Healthy Prostate:  Go Soy!

Did you know that soy protein can actually be very good for the health of your prostate? Adding more soy to your diet can be the way to go, so find places where soy can be added as much as possible. Soy milk can replace regular milk in your breakfast cereal, and tofu can be a handy addition to your salad. Eat soy nuts, soy flour, soy powder, and even textured soy in order to give your body the nutrients it needs to keep that little gland healthy.

Have a Healthy Prostate: Get Tested

It’s important that you get checked out every few years once you reach the age of 45 or 50. If you come from a family that has had prostate cancer, 45 is a good age to start. The same is true for those who have a higher risk of developing the cancer, such as African American men. Make sure to visit your doctor every few years for a PSA blood test and a checkup, even if it is a fairly unpleasant one. By getting checked out regularly, you can catch the problem when it’s still in its early stages — making it easier to prevent it from getting out of hand!

Have a Healthy Prostate: Eat More Selenium

There are certain foods that are rich in selenium, such as tuna, wheat germ, herring, shellfish, seafood,  eggs, sunflowers, garlic, onions, and cashew nuts. These foods contain the nutrient that will help to reduce your risk of developing prostate cancer, and the same nutrient will be beneficial to your body in many other ways. If you want to have a healthy body and reduce your chance of developing prostate cancer or prostatitis, eat more selenium.

Have a Healthy Prostate: Find Healthy Fat

Yes, there is such a thing as healthy fats, though you’ll have to watch the quantities of these fats that you consume. Unsaturated fats from foods like nuts, fish, and olives will be excellent for your health, and they will boost the health of your heart while keeping your prostate healthy. Avoid the bad saturated and trans fats, as they’ll have a negative effect on the health of your prostate.

Have a Healthy Prostate: Lifestyle Choices

Making a few simple lifestyle choices can help you to not only have a healthy prostate, but be healthy overall. Here are some things you can do:

Exercise – A study showed that men that do exercise can not only prevent prostate problems, but actually manage the symptoms and pains of these problems. Aerobic exercise is the best for your prostate health, but any kind of exercise that gets your heart pumping and your lungs working will be great to keep you healthy. Do exercise at least 3 to 5 times a week, and you’ll find your prostate stays in good working condition.

Quit Smoking –Smoking not only raised your blood pressure, increases your cholesterol levels, and gives you lung and throat cancer, but it has been linked to prostate problems. Keeping your prostate healthy is important, especially if you have a family history of prostate cancer or prostatitis. Quit smoking, and you’ll decrease your risk drastically.

Eat Less – Cutting down your portion sizes will help you to manage your weight, which will reduce your risk of having prostate problems. Those that are overweight are more likely to develop these problems, so manage your portions to keep your weight healthy.

Reduce Sodium – Sodium isn’t just bad for your heart, but it’s bad for your prostate as well. Sodium causes your body to retain water, which can strain your heart and prevent healthy circulation. Good circulation is a must for a healthy prostate, so avoid high sodium foods as much as possible.

If you do these things, you’ll have a healthy prostate and a much healthier life!

Great article, I think if 40% of men age 45 to 65 would follow the guidelines it would reduce prostate cancer by 70 to 80% in 5 years.
